John A. Vickers


John Vickers was Head of the Department of Religious and Social Studies in the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education until retiring in 1981. He has written and edited numerous works, including the online version of the 'Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland'.

His PhD thesis (Southampton University, 1987) was on 'Methodism in Central Southern England'. He has served over the years on the Executive of the Wesley Historical Society and as British Secretary of the World Methodist Historical Society. As official indexer to the Wesley Works Project, he won the Wheatley Medal for the outstanding index of 1976.

In 1964 he gave the Wesley Historical Society's annual lecture on which this biography of Thomas Coke was based. He has since published a collection of his lectures on Coke under the title 'Thomas Coke Revisited' (2010) and editions of Coke's 'Journals' (2005) and 'Letters'(2013).
