Helder Camara

About

Dom Helder Camara, one of the world's best-known and beloved contemporary religious figures, served as archbishop of Olinda and Recife in northeast Brazil from 1964 to 1985. As pastor of this huge and poverty-stricken rural area, Dom Helder became spokesperson not only for those in his home archdiocese but for people everywhere who share his conviction that truth and justice can change those structures in the world that oppress and dehumanize. Dom Helder Camara is the author of 'Hoping Against All Hope', 'Questions for Living', and 'Through the Gospel with Dom Helder Camara' (1986 Christopher Award).
