About-

To be a follower of Jesus means to bear witness to the truth of God. In an age when so many contemporary voices portray faith as a form of personal therapy, Gene L. Davenport, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Lambuth University, has consistently reminded us in his own witness that the truth of the Gospel entails confrontation with the world that dwells in darkness. These essays in honor of Davenport address the meaning of witness in the face of racism, sexism, and religious bigotry, to name but some of the forms this darkness takes. The topics range from emerging forms of prayer to religious themes in cowboy music, from the work of white pastors in Mississippi during the growing Civil Rights Movement to the meaning of the Righteous Gentile in Jewish-Christian friendship.

Endorsements & Reviews-

"Gene Davenport was a seventeen-year-old Alabama pastor when he came into my life. He had taken on a segment of the Klu Klux Klan and was threatened with federal imprisonment. This is an important volume and belongs on the shelves of every library in America."
--Will D. Campbell
author of Brother to a Dragonfly

"Gene Davenport is one of the great prophetic teachers of the church. When Gene was run out of Alabama, because of his commitment to the way of Jesus amid a turbulent time, we unwittingly gave a great gift to the church beyond our church--Gene Davenport. This book, which exemplifies so much that Gene tried to teach us, is a great tribute to his ministry. It is also strong, biblical encouragement for the rest of us to walk the way of Jesus, to speak truth to power, to stand up to the powers, and to practice what we preach."
--Will Willimon
author of Who Will be Saved?

"A fitting and faithful tribute to a man of Acts, a Southern cowboy professor whose clear-eyed gospel vision helps others see the grace and mercy and justice of God at work in this world."
--David Waters
editor, On Faith, washingtonpost.com

"How ironic--and how fitting--that Gene Davenport, a man who has made a career out of hiding his light under a bushel, should now be publicly heralded by more than dozen of his illustrious peers, some of whom found their own courage and inspiration in his words, spoken and written."
--John Egerton
author of Speak Now Against the Day
