Design for Teaching and Training - A Teacher's Guide
A Teacher's Guide for Interactive Learning and Instruction
by LeRoy Ford
Imprint: Wipf and Stock
When LifeWay Christian Resources awarded LeRoy Ford the title, "Father of Interactive Writing for Southern Baptists," Ford quipped, "At my age, I should be the great-grandfather instead of the father." Ford has done extensive work in the development of curriculum designs and plans in theological education. His book A Manual for Curriculum Design in Theological Education: A Learning Outcomes Focus, was the first publication of its kind.
He has led teaching and curriculum design workshops in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and in seminaries, Bible schools, churches, and denominational organizations in the United States. Author of fifteen books on learning theory and methods, Ford developed a cartooned-writing technique for a series of books on instruction methodology. While professor in the Foundations of Education Department at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Ford taught curriculum design, curriculum writing, and principles of teaching. In retirement in Colorado, Ford has expanded his writing to include books on family history. He also continues to hold curriculum design workshops. Some of his other interests are gardening and photography of Colorado wild flowers.
"LeRoy Ford led for us our first workshop on interactive writing and out of that came The Survival Kit for New Christians, Masterlife, Experiencing God, The Mind of Christ and many other of our Lay Institute for Equipping (LIFE) courses."
Roy Edgemon, Director of Discipleship Training, LifeWay Christian Resources
"Whenever I prepare to teach a college or seminary class, or construct a Sunday School lesson, I apply the principles of teaching that I learned from Dr. LeRoy Ford. In my opinion Dr. Ford is the master teacher of our generation. Design For Teaching and Training contains the philosophy of teaching developed by Dr. Ford and is presented in such a way that it is helpful to a Sunday School teacher or a PhD student. Only Dr. Ford could present information that bridges that gap so effectively. The illustrations and cartoons used make the most difficult concepts understandable. This is my number one book to prepare leaders as effective teachers of the Word of God."
Brian Richardson, Basil Manly Jr. professor of Christian Education, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
"Teaching and learning are as old as the garden, but we are always surprised
when they happen together. Writing with a passion fueled by years of
experience as a classroom practitioner and curriculum developer, LeRoy Ford
has given new life to an ancient art by taking us on a conducted tour for
designing a teaching and training plan. This long-overdue rewrite, with its
easy-to-understand language, will enrich the teaching of both professionals
and laypersons alike."
Wm.. A. "Budd" Smith
J. M. Price Professor of Foundations
The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary
"LeRoy Ford is today's leading exemplar of rational lesson planning. No one else has done so much to put good learning theory to work in the reform of theological education, or been so utterly consistent in theory and practice."
D. Campbell Wyckoff,
Former Professor of Christian Education, Princeton Theological Seminary
Design for Teaching and Training is a gift from a true teacher for other teachers. LeRoy Ford's passion for learning energizes this book. His years of intelligent and observant experience are revealed in the down to earth synergy of theory and practice."
