Leadership Expectations
How Executive Expectations are Created and Used in a Non-Profit Setting By Gene Early
Leadership Expectations is an in-depth study of expectations and how one leader creates and uses them to shape a university, its culture, and its success. This research operates on the underlying assumption that the organization is an expression of the leader and the people he or she attracts. As the personal, interpersonal, and organizational agendas a leader carries in their mind and enacts in their behavior are understood, the organization can be understood. Concurrently, at least one major means of organizational transformation emerges, executive development. The result: their personal development (and/or lack of it) drives organizational performance. The cost: their self-sacrifices energize the values they most deeply hold for themselves, others, and the university they lead. The reward: truth revealed, about themselves, others, and their organization; lives touched and transformed, including their own; and organizational capacity for good increased.
Author - Gene Early
Foreword - Rosemary Stewart
"I've worked with Gene Early over ten years. He lives the principles presented here, and the rigour of this work clearly substantiates my contention that organizations are a reflection of their leadership in terms of language, behaviour, and attitudes." —Sue Cheshire, Managing Director, Academy for Chief Executives
"The outstanding research behind Leadership Expectations is an 'inquiry from the inside.' It provides the richness of an ethnographic case study combined with rigorous theoretical thinking. Researchers, as well as executives, will find many insights here to shape their thinking and actions." —Nanette Fondas, author of Feminization Unveiled: Management Qualities in Contemporary Writings
"In this book, Gene Early brings his world class expertise to bear on the critical issue of leadership expectations. In co-founding Genomic Health with him, I discovered how demanding, and how rewarding, applying these principles can be." —Randy Scott, Chairman and CEO, Genomic Health, Inc.
