This book describes several aspects of contemporary culture that create both opportunities and threats to Christian mission.

After presenting the history of the church in relation to Western culture, Wilson draws upon specific suggestions in Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue, critically examining their relation to Christian mission today:
—that we live in a fragmented rather than pluralistic world
—that the church has compromised its faithfulness by accommodating the mainstream of morality
—that there are implications stemming from the collapse of “The Enlightenment project”
—that there is a need for a “new monasticism” together with other forms of life the church must take on to sustain a faithful witness in contemporary culture
