To Hear the Word
By John Howard Yoder
John Howard Yoder (1927-1997) stands out as one of the most influential theologians/ethicists of the twentieth century. His works have engaged and continue to challenge students and colleagues from varying disciplines and traditions.
This present collection of essays relates to Yoder's thoughts on his reading of Scripture. While protesting that there was nothing idiosyncratic, or original, or sectarian, about his reading of biblical texts, Yoder did respond to invitations to explain himself, in various writings that have mostly remained unpublished until now.
Broken into three sections, To Hear the Word provides readers this insight into Yoder's thought: Section one, ”Exegetical Exercises,” offers three exegetical studies, section two, “Reading with Care,” gives Yoder's attempt to explain himself, and section three, “From the Archives,” provides dated yet relevant essays that shed further light on why Yoder read Scripture as he did.
