About-

In this hard-hitting book, Richard V. Pierard examines the growing affinity between evangelical Christianity and political and economic conservatism that was occurring in the 1960s, and eloquently appeals for a dissolution of these unwarranted ties.

The Christian faith stresses love for one's neighbor, selflessness, humility, and peacemaking, virtues which are at variance with the practices of the right. Pierard's critique of the linkage of Christianity with American nationalism, militarism, and capitalism is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago.

By bringing this unfortunate situation into the open, he hopes to encourage evangelical leaders to break this "unequal yoke" and unleash the spiritual forces of American evangelicalism for meaningful participation in the growth of world Christianity.

Endorsements & Reviews-

"Richard Pierard's Unequal Yoke is no less relevant today than when it first appeared in 1970, thereby making its author something of a prophet. This was a formative book in the development of my own political consciousness, and I recommend it highly to anyone who is trying to construct a political ethic consistent with the teachings of Jesus."

Randall Balmer, Columbia University

"A careful analysis by a gifted historian on a topic that is still highly relevant."

Ronald J. Sider, Evangelicals for Social Action

"Pierard's trenchant, biblically-based critique of the distortions of the Christian message on the Religious Right remains timely and prophetic, and it deserves an especially wide readership among evangelicals themselves."

Jacob H. Dorn, Wright State University

"The Unequal Yoke was a prophetic piece when it first appeared and it remains a prophetic piece today. As they did in the last generation, many evangelical Christians today still persist in unequally yoking themselves to right-wing partisan politics, and name of Christ suffers from it. As Pierard correctly notes, the New Testament admonition to avoid the unequal yoke applies to politics as well as marriage and other social relationships."

Robert D. Linder, Kansas State University
