"All Souls Day follows directly on All Saints Day, the one triumphant, the other penitential. And it is Heath's great merit to show that Cluny was the fountainhead of the feasts of All Souls - meaning literally 'all' souls. He emphasizes especially the vast proportions of the network of confraternal prayers, remembrances, and masses for the dead which, under imperial sponsorship and Cluny's direction, developed prodigiously throughout the entire eleventh century."
