The Word in the Wind
Sermons for the Lectionary, Year A, Advent through Eastertide
Imprint: Wipf and Stock
The growing use and appreciation of the Common Lectionary (Revised) has stimulated renewed attention to the Christian calendar in its fullness and an enrichment of liturgical worship. In this volume, Bruce Taylor offers a collection of theologically rich, sacramentally sensitive, and biblically centered sermons for the Sundays and feast days in the first half of Year A of the Lectionary, featuring Gospel readings from Matthew with attention to the accompanying Old Testament and epistolary texts. Included is a sampling of sermons written as engaging stories, and a sermon presented during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Preachers will find here encouragement for their own homiletical observance of the liturgical year and ecumenical celebrations, and the mutual and intimate relationship between Word and Sacrament. All readers will find a thoughtful and stimulating resource for their own life of faith, witness, and devotion.
Bruce L. Taylor is a retired Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) minister who served congregations in Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, Nevada, and Oklahoma, and is a retired attorney. He is a graduate of Northwestern University (BA, Latin), the University of Denver (JD), the Iliff School of Theology (MDiv), and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (PhD, church history), and was an organizer and the secretary and treasurer of the Association for Reformed & Liturgical Worship.
“This rich and diverse collection of sermons serves as a source of inspiration for devotional readings as well as a model of faithful proclamation. Readers will benefit greatly from Taylor’s theological insight and literary skill that allow lectionary texts to come to life in thoughtful ways.”
—Paul Galbreath, Professor of Theology, Union Presbyterian Seminary, Charlotte, NC
“This book of sermons preached by a pastor to his congregation provides creative insights for those who closely listen for new voices to bring old stories to life. Taylor is a scholar and storyteller; he is attentive to his context and wise enough to see the universal applications of well-worn lessons. This eloquent gift is for preachers and those who are eager to discover new treasure in well plowed fields!”
—Gregg A. Mast, President Emeritus, New Brunswick Theological Seminary
