This companion reveals Rudolf Schwarz to be one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century. As a German architect and mystic he created some beautiful churches in a stripped-down 1930s-Modern style, but he is most revered for a single book-in English translation The Church Incarnate. In it he explores the relationships between God and God's people, relationships expressed when they meet together in worship.
Schwarz is revered for his spiritual insights but it is sometimes hard to follow him on his mystical wanderings. This companion accompanies him on his sacred journey, gently guiding him back on track when he wanders off-course and keeping him cheerful. This journey has had a surprising outcome: a discovery that, embedded in its union of earth and heaven, is a practical and logical structure for the renewal of the church; renewal of its worship, space, and its ministry. Already several congregations seeking renewal have used these concepts to find clarity and direction for their own sacred journey into the future.
Gerald Robinson, a former architect, is an adjunct professor of theology in the Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College in the University of Toronto. He has a doctorate from Leeds University and an M.Arch. from Harvard.
"This is a guidebook. Seasoned travelers choose guidebooks not only to capture the essence of a place but also to get their bearings so they can continue to explore the same territory on their own. By distilling decades of theological reflection and practical application of Rudolf Schwarz's The Church Incarnate into just such a guidebook, Gerald Robinson invites his readers to follow him into the largely unknown realm of the theology of worship, space, and design. This will equip them with provisions for a profitable first visit, yet with enough depth to invite further explorations."
—GEOFFREY READY, Co-Director, Orthodox School of Theology at Trinity College
"Gerald Robinson's passion for the sacred architecture of Rudolf Schwarz has an intensity frankly not found in books about 'church architecture.' This book is not about bricks, mortar, and Schwarz. It is about God, Schwarz, and Us (the readers). As a former student of Gerald's, and now a full-time Schwarz theologian myself, I found this new book to be invaluable. Gerald's gift is for understanding Schwarz and making him accessible. Having studied Schwarz for a lifetime, Gerald is now certainly the world’s foremost authority on Schwarz. Everyone reading this book will gain a valuable insight into the work of Schwarz, as well as an understanding of space, worship, and Sacred Architecture."
—JAMES RYAN, Founding President, The Rudolf Schwarz Society, Ottawa, Canada
"To the question, 'Does Robinson's work make Rudolf Schwarz's The Church Incarnate more intelligible?' I would respond with a resounding 'Yes!' This companion makes a significant contribution, not only to further our understanding of Rudolf Schwarz, but also to a general conversation on liturgical space."
