- Fugue
This book is the manifestation of seven years of spiritual wrestling done by the author in order to respond to his own internal doubts and existential questions, while reconciling the emotional turmoil lived with a satisfactory intellectual understanding of the reasons why it occurred in the first place. Therefore, the aim in writing this book and exposing to the public is to help others who may be going through a similar situation, and might be looking for some sort of guidance. By building this work with many layers of understanding, the author is able to connect with a diverse audience while transmitting the same message.
Alejandro Casas is a graduate student in the Department of Religious Studies of Florida International University (FIU). He holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with honors, and a double major in philosophy. Furthermore, he is McNair Scholar who worked with electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) of pediatric anxiety disorders, and who has also completed a postbaccalaureate program in pre-medicine.
“To read this poetry is to take a journey from the outer to the inner. No matter what your background or belief, you will find things to ponder and wonder at. Subtle and intense, they will take you on a voyage of discovery of yourself and the world around you.”
—Erik Larson, chair, Department of Religious Studies, Florida International University
“Fugue presents the musings of a very young but exceedingly bright and incisive mind. Readers of all ages and from all walks of life will most certainly locate themselves somewhere in the moments and moods Alejandro Casas Reyes captures so beautifully in poetic language in this work.”
—Albert Kafui Wuaku, Associate Professor of Ethnography and African/African Diaspora Religions, Florida International University
“This collection of poems captures the drops of time that make up what we call experience. True poiesis, it enables the moments to bubble up rather than channeling the moments into any specific end. An experience-inducing read from a highly attuned author.”
—Whitney Bauman, Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Florida International University
“Fugue is a magnificent book of poems. Alejandro delightfully takes the reader on a deep journey. This journey is a road full of live colors that makes the reader gently smile and in other parts tears can easily come. The reader can submerge in these chronological poems and feel and identify with the author.”
—Nery Máiquez, reverend, St Lazarus Church, Miami, Florida
