For over thirty years C. E. Hastie has struggled with these three conditions: Covetousness, Jealousy, and Envy. She eventually realized that was partly because they are so closely related and interconnected. They blend one into another, and this makes them difficult to identify and deal with. She knew and experienced the spiritual symptoms but needed a clearer diagnosis to gain a better understanding of each one. It was also noticeable that other Christians were quite reluctant to admit to having problems in these areas, which made them hard to discuss. This is understandable; they are ugly in nature, especially envy.
The overall aim of this book is to give a working definition of each "sister" with some ideas for combatting these conditions using accounts and verses from the Bible. There is a final section on the evil eye, which, though related to the other three, is not quite the same.
The author still struggles with these three issues but believes that with the Lord's help she and the reader can make progress together.
C. E. Hastie is a retired English lecturer and religious education teacher. She has been a Christian for thirty-five years. She is married to Stephen and has two children and three grandchildren. She lives in Plymouth, United Kingdom.
“In this book, C. E. Hastie exposes the three ugly sisters (covetousness, jealousy, and envy) and their raw destructive natures. Hastie provides a mirror to the complexity of our heart, revealing these ugly sisters hidden in our very center. Only then, through sanctification, can we evict them.”
—Colin Shewry, author of Being Yourself in Jesus
“This book has been a timely reminder that, often without noticing, envy and jealousy can creep in, getting in the way of relationships and preventing me from living my best life. Using the ideas in Three Ugly Sisters has been a gift. I shall be using the help I have found here in my work in the community.”
—Mariska Minter, families and outreach worker, St. Pancras Church
“What impressed me most about this book was how it brought to light faults in my own personality of which I was completely unaware. However, even though ‘ugly’ things were revealed, as a committed Christian, it is uplifting to see my inner faults and to get a chance to correct them. Our life is a journey with many forks in the road and it is good to learn when we have unknowingly taken the wrong fork.”
—James McCaig, retired chaplaincy administrator, HM Naval Base
“Exposing the roots of our captivity, Hastie skillfully tackles the unpopular concept of ‘sin’ using comprehensive biblical knowledge with clarity, integrity, and insight. The result? As Hastie’s godly, practical wisdom permeates these pages, God’s living word begins to read me, exposing my own sinful heart which I thought intact.”
—Heather Bartholomew, retired teacher and counselor
