Monthly Entries for the Spiritual but not Religious through the Year
Texts, Reflections, Journal/Meditations, and Prayers for the Spiritual but not Religious
Imprint: Wipf and Stock
This is a book about spirituality for the spiritual but not religious. Those who identify themselves as spiritual but not religious make up one quarter of the population in the United States. This book provides 189 monthly entries based on the national and international celebrations that occur every month. Each entry begins with the name of the occasion and the date when it is marked during the month. A text from the Bible, a US public law, a presidential proclamation, a United Nations declaration, etc. that illustrates the day is presented. The text is followed by a reflection which gleans the spirituality from the text and provides historical background on the day being celebrated. Journal/meditation questions follow the reflection, and a prayer concludes the entry. This book is for the spiritual but not religious, a practice of spirituality that does not regard organized religion as a valuable means to further interior spiritual growth. A section of the introduction to the book explores who the spiritual but not religious are and presents the common themes that surface from research about them.
Mark G. Boyer—a well-known spiritual master—has been writing books on spirituality—biblical, liturgical, and devotional—for thirty-five years. He has authored sixty-seven previous books, most of which prompt the reader to recognize the divine in everyday life. This is his twenty-seventh Wipf and Stock title.
“Following his standard paradigm, Fr. Boyer offers interesting historical insights and fascinating facts about our monthly civic celebrations, both traditional and novel. He enriches these events with a reflective spiritual or biblical thought that applies to daily living. While intended specifically for those who style themselves spiritual rather than religious, the text offers ample inspiration to all its readers. An engaging and inspiring read!”
—Pauline Nugent, CCVI, Missouri State University
“From the most whimsical (Love Your Pet Day, National Tattoo Day) to modern day celebrations (Groundhog Day, Superbowl Sunday) to our most cherished holidays (Christmas, Easter, Ramadan, Kwanza), this short catalog of celebratory days provides little known facts, a listing of what has been and what has become a part of our lives, and allows us to stop a moment and think about what we hold most precious.”
—Victor H. Matthews, Missouri State University
“Embarking on a spiritual journey is not, by necessity, a religious endeavor, and not all who desire spiritual enrichment require that pursuit to be based in religious practice or scripture. Once again demonstrating his scholarly expertise and his talent for spiritual guidance, Boyer escorts the reader through meditative reflection to find the divine in the everyday, and the sacred in the secular.”
