About this book

The "Golden-Mouthed" preacher, John Chrysostom, was one of the most significant voices of his time. This introduction to Chrysostom's life and thought invites readers to come to know the fourth-century bishop as a friend in the communion of saints. Covering both his biography as well as major themes in his preaching—pastoral theology, asceticism, virtue (Christian living), wealth and poverty, salvation, and some problematic beliefs—this book asks readers what they might learn from Chrysostom today. Anyone who has heard of the famous preacher and wants to know more, or anyone who is simply looking for a wise guide to lead them closer to Christ, will find wisdom in these pages.

Praise for this book

“Samantha Miller would have been your favorite professor if you’d have been blessed enough to study with her. With this wise, clear, and elegant volume about her difficult friend John Chrysostom, we can all sit at her feet and grow not only more learned but holier.”

Jason Byassee, Twelfth Senior Minister, Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, Toronto

“Miller unpacks John Chrysostom’s theology in a way that is deceptively simple and accessible, while introducing her readers to many of the latest developments in the field. Writing in a conversational style, with discussion questions at the end of each chapter, Miller gently brings to life the problematic sides of John as much as the ones she loves. A persuasive case for his relevance as a conversation partner for pastoral students and lay Christians today.”

Wendy Mayer, Emeritus Professor, University of Divinity, Australia
