John's Revelation is the most misunderstood book of the Bible. Even church fathers, Martin Luther, and other Protestant leaders questioned its inclusion in the Bible. The book of Revelation is not meant to be a complex puzzle itching to be solved. Rather, it is a first-century document that needs to be understood in the context of the Greco-Roman world while paying close attention to the hundreds of allusions to Old Testament Scripture.
Dan J. Harvey started his career in technology, working for a number of Fortune 100 corporations as a computer consultant, and finally as president of a value-added reseller of computer systems. He then began a second career as a professor of computer science while earning his PhD. He is now professor emeritus of computer science at Southern Oregon University. Since retirement, he has focused his attention on research related to biblical theology.
“Dan Harvey’s Experiencing the Apocalypse opens the Revelation to John in new and surprising ways. Grounded in deep scholarship, Harvey’s storytelling approach to biblical apocalyptic breaks open the symbolic meaning of these texts and makes them accessible to all readers. Experiencing the Apocalypse is a powerful resource both for those who are familiar with the text as well as those who are not—as well as for those many who have simply avoided it. This is a revelation!”
—Simon C. Justice, priest in charge, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
“Dan Harvey’s Experiencing the Apocalypse is a beautiful, guided tour of the challenging book of Revelation. Through engaging dialogue with the apostle John, readers gain fascinating historical and theological insights that demystify and contextualize the text. Written for a general audience, this book provides thought-provoking ‘questions to consider’ for deeper exploration and discussion. Prepare to see Revelation in a new light!”
—Jekabs Bikis, interim pastor, Oregon Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church
“Many of these core chapters deploy a novel approach to literary analysis, featuring pseudo-conversations in contemporary, colloquial English between author Dan Harvey, John of Patmos, early Christians, Jews, and Roman authorities, who provide their first-century perspectives on Revelation’s passages. This stylistic choice reflects Harvey’s desire to provide lay readers with an accessible, engaging book that includes an ample assortment of illustrations. . . . Its approachable writing style is accompanied by a bibliography that reflects a solid grasp of the Roman Empire and its history. . . . Its nuanced approach to Revelation . . . is refreshing in a Christian genre often dominated by zany takes.”
