The Book of Judith
by Wendi Bernau
Imprint: Resource Publications
The Book of Judith is an epic tale of faith and strength in the face of certain doom. Drawing upon deceit and trickery as an act of service, this unlikely hero saves her people from destruction. Based on the apocryphal book of Judith, this visually compelling account retains the wry humor, wit, and theological milieu of the ancient author.
Wendi Bernau is an artist and spiritual director with the Missional Wisdom Foundation. This graphic novel is a consequence of her Doctor of Ministry in Art & Theology program at Wesley Theological Seminary.
“Wendi Bernau helps us experience the epic story of Judith in a new way. Her graphic novel stays faithful to the biblical text, while sprinkling in some sardonic wit that maintains the tone of the original tale. The stylized illustrations engage the reader without trivializing the story. Through the interplay of word and image, Bernau helps us travel along with Judith on her incredible hero’s journey.”
—Russell W. Dalton, Professor of Religious Education, Brite Divinity School
“Wendi Bernau’s charming and entertaining graphic novel brings the book of Judith to life again. She captures the sweeping action, the humor, and the whimsical nature of the original, along with Judith’s audacious deed! For many, this may be their first reading of this book from the Apocrypha, and it introduces it very well.”
—Lawrence Wills, Visiting Professor of Judaic Studies and Religious Studies, Brown University
“My colleague Wendi Bernau is a unicorn—a mythical creature full of magic and wonder. In this striking work, she combines her artistic eye with her theological mind to retell the story of the brave young woman who stands up for her people when hope is lost. The story of Judith is the story of a hero, and Bernau’s engaging graphics and dramatic pacing bring the story to life in a wonderful and magical way.”
—Larry Duggins, Leader and Executive Director, Missional Wisdom Foundation
“Bernau’s delightful graphic novel presentation of Judith teaches and entertains, just as the book of Judith was meant to do long ago. In our visual society, the pairing of words and images brings this biblical story to life and stimulates our imaginations. Judith’s thought bubbles prompt us to savor the inferences, double-entendres, and ironies abundant in the book. Bernau’s work can help make the Bible more accessible.”
—Denise Dombkowski Hopkins, Woodrow and Mildred Miller Professor of Biblical Theology and Hebrew Bible, Wesley Theological Seminary
