There are two sides to every story. These poems reveal these stories with an unexpected twist. Read the poems forwards for one perspective, then read the poems backwards to uncover a new, hidden meaning. This structure may remind you of a palindrome where individual letters spell the same words forwards and backwards, but these poems are unique in two significant ways. First, they are read backwards by word or phrase, not by letter. Second, the backwards reading introduces another voice or perspective. You might be surprised what you find by looking in a mirror at the reflection that's there.
Houston Heflin is professor of spiritual formation at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, where he teaches courses for the undergraduate Bible department, the Honors College, and the Graduate School of Theology. He is the author of Pray Like You Breathe, and I Promise It’s True.
“Those of us who have taught the Bible to university students over the last several years are sometimes frustrated with their lack of familiarity with what was once common knowledge. But there is another equally vexing problem. Some of us have read certain texts so often that we fail to hear them any longer. Dr Heflin has found a unique way to make us slow down, pause, lean in, and hear old words with new life.”
—Randy Harris, senior fellow, Siburt Institute, Abilene Christian University
“In Faith in Mirrors, Heflin is frugal and every bit as careful with his words. He cleverly crafts key gospel lessons into poems. These poems are simultaneously simple and profound. Each word and phrase is hefty—leaving the reader to contemplate the perspectives and the meaning of each one, and motivating prayer. What is so brilliant about these is that they can be read by young and old while providing spiritual nourishment and insight to both.”
—Dr. Marlena Graves, author of Bearing God
“Great communicators know the importance of telling a story ’slant.’ New angles. Fresh twist. All these help us appreciate the textured perspectives and new insights old truths have to offer new generations. In Faith in Mirrors, Houston Heflin offers us new surprises inside the stories we thought we always knew. Here you will find new wineskins and ways to approach the stories of scripture you already thought you knew.”
— Sean Palmer, author Speaking By the Numbers and Unarmed Empire
