Our History

Established in 1995, Wipf and Stock Publishers started as a joint venture between John Wipf of The Archives Bookshop in Pasadena, California, and Jon Stock of Windows Booksellers in Eugene, Oregon. As booksellers with over thirty years of bookselling experience between them, they noticed a number of changes in the academic book business. They observed an increase in both the price of new academic books and the rate they were going out of print. They also experienced an increased demand for books that were unable to meet publishers’ requirements for remaining in print.

In an attempt to address these dilemmas, Wipf and Stock was created. By specializing in short book runs, John Wipf and Jon Stock were not only able to supply their own bookstores with the classic theology, biblical studies, and church history titles for which they continued to receive requests; they also found themselves fulfilling the requests of professors and textbook managers who needed out-of-print texts for classroom use. Thus began the Custom Reprinting division of the company—a division that continues to keep it very busy. Wipf and Stock presently has several thousand titles in its inventory, adding approximately four hundred per year.

Over the course of working with various authors and professors, Wipf and Stock also began to receive requests to publish new books. The company was able to provide an option for many good manuscripts that were failing to meet the sales projections of old-school publishing houses. Since the year 2000, Wipf and Stock has published over two thousand (2000) new manuscripts under our four different imprints: Wipf & Stock, Cascade Books, Pickwick Publications, and Resource Publications, and now averages over 400 new publications annually.
