About-

Here they come—our ancient, never-aging alphabetical friends. This little book of light verse and pleasing sketches endows each letter with personality, some charming and some a bit rascally, some odd and some pathetic. Most of the letters take humor seriously, and so, as the verse and art frolic about them, they maintain their expected dignity and grace. They will, however, allow you a chuckle at their expense. If, perchance, you have neglected these steadfast friends, here is your chance to make amends. Samuel Johnson said, “If a man does not make new acquaintance as he advances through life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man, Sir, should keep his friendship in constant repair.” Maybe a little visit with our saints and scamps will renew your friendship with each one—and help to keep that friendship in a state of jolly good repair.

Endorsements & Reviews-

“For abecedarians of every age and stage of development, here’s a short but showy book about your twenty-six friends in the English alphabet. If you have forgotten the peculiar personalities of those letters, Raymond Haan is here to remind you of what makes these characters so full of character. And the artwork beautifully complements the letters and words. A modest but lively feast for the eye and the ear.”

—James Vanden Bosch, Professor of English, Calvin College

“In today’s world, few things could be more needed or curative than playfulness. Raymond Haan’s Alphabetical Frolic is thus just what the doctor ordered. Full of insightful and clever observations, the book presents this overlooked dimension of our daily lives, the alphabet, tumbling delightfully in Haan’s playful mastery of words. It’s reading that often made me smile and say, ‘I never thought of that!’”

—Ron Herrema, composer, digital artist, and Senior Lecturer in Creative Computing, Bath Spa University

Raymond H. Haan attended Calvin College and the University of Michigan. He scrambled through thirty-nine years of teaching English, simultaneously pursuing his passion for music by serving a church musician and publishing much music for worship. Since retiring from teaching and active music-making, he has written a light-hearted book of serious grammar instruction, has produced miscellaneous prose, and written a good helping of poetry, including Singing the Gamut and Word Songs and Whimsies, published by Wipf and Stock.

Chris M. Cook has been an artist since she could hold a crayon. She graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design, long before artwork was done on the computer. A mom of five, she enjoys most forms of creative expression.
