About-

Written by nationally and internationally known homileticians and preachers, this book offers a fascinating survey of the significant developments in preaching, beginning with the Old Testament, moving through the history of preaching, and concluding with a look into the future, all while offering practical suggestions for meeting the challenges that lie ahead. In a unique way, it addresses both the academic issues raised during each period and the practical implications for preaching today and in the future.

Endorsements & Reviews-

God’s Word and Our Words is a rich feast and a delight. Time after time we see that God raises up preachers in order to bring renewal, revival, and new life to his church. May he do it again as we remind ourselves of our history and learn its lessons!”

—Simon Vibert, Vicar of Christ Church, Virginia Water

“Just as ‘Jesus came preaching’ (Mark 1:14), so the church has had preaching as a central focus of its life and work through the centuries. In God’s Word and Our Words, a stellar team of contributors walks the reader through the history of Christian preaching in an engaging and readable way. Growing out of a symposium held at Baylor University, each chapter takes a portion of the preaching story, from the Old Testament prophets to contemporary evangelicalism. Any student of preaching will find this to be a must-have volume.”

—Michael Duduit, Clamp Divinity School, Anderson University, and Executive Editor, Preaching magazine

“There are seasons in every preacher's life when discouragement strikes in the pulpit. We wonder whether preaching is really worth it. In God's Word and Our Words, Gloer and Boyd assemble leading voices from the fields of biblical studies, church history, and homiletics to remind and inspire preachers of the past, present, and future significance of preaching—its joys and its challenges. . . . Be prepared to have your fire for preaching rekindled!”

—Matthew D. Kim, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, author of Preaching with Cultural Intelligence and A Little Book for New Preachers

“Packed into this succinct volume is the story of Christian preaching, told by some of the more able scholars of our day. The essays provide critical insights into the biblical, theological, and homiletical genius of preaching. Some writers address the glorious past, others speak to strength in diversity, while some point the way forward for preaching in an uncertain post-Christian world. This should be required reading for lovers of preaching everywhere.”

—Cleophus J. LaRue, Princeton Theological Seminary

“This book is a valuable resource that brings together a wide range of preaching perspectives. The topics as much as the voices you’ll hear are rich and varied. Each contributor shares a common love for homiletics, the listener, and the Lord. Readers will benefit from their years of pastoral and pulpit experience.”

—Patricia Batten, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

“The contributors bring a variety of styles and perspectives as they focus on particular historical and cultural expressions of preaching. Some chapters are introductory, some apologetic, and some exploratory. Each chapter stands in its own right while helpfully being part of the wider discussion on the nature of preaching past, present, and future.”

—Stuart Blythe, Acadia Divinity College

God's Word and Our Words is a unique and richly informative guide to preaching in the Bible, church history, and the contemporary world. Remarkable in scope, it contains much to stimulate and challenge teachers and students of preaching, to think deeply about the practice of preaching past, present, and future.”

—Julian Gotobed, University of Roehampton

“Whether you are interested in the history or the future of preaching, God’s Word and Our Words is an essential read. As a homiletics professor, this will be my go-to guide for educating the next generation of preachers. Every chapter reflects the expertise of the contributors with insights that go beyond historical dates and names. This book is beautifully written by the top homileticians of today. A brilliant piece of work!”

—Chris Rappazini, Moody Bible Institute, President of the Evangelical Homiletics Society
