About-

This book is a memoir that explores the journey of one family. It examines how personal experiences interact with institutional settings to shape both individuals and communities. While the focus of the narrative is on the life and work of George Rupp, the telling of that story is inextricably connected with family relationships and also with institutional developments—in particular at Harvard Divinity School, Rice and Columbia Universities, and the International Rescue Committee.

Endorsements & Reviews-

“For almost half a century, George Rupp has been one of the most important national and international leaders at the crucial intersection of higher education and the broader world. The Heart of Community connects the professional with the personal and the global with the local through enduring values that are desperately needed today. This engaging story of a remarkable family gives us all reason to hope in this dark time.”

—Mark C. Taylor, Professor of Religion, Columbia University

“From the beginning of its preface, The Heart of Community is a wonderful and inspiring read. Across a sequence of extraordinary leadership of great institutions, George Rupp made those institutions and the world they contributed to better. At the same time, he lived a life of family and adventure. One completes this book with a sense of both admiration and possibility, as the ideal of community contribution is realized through an individual life well lived.”

—David Leebron, President of Rice University

“An engaging memoir by one of America’s top academic and NGO leaders. George Rupp takes the reader on his life’s journey from growing up in New Jersey with his immigrant parents to the pinnacle of university and nonprofit leadership. Along the way, he shares his personal thoughts on family, faith, work, activist causes, academia, and global development—and how individualism and community help to shape us all. An absorbing account by an insightful author.”

—George Biddle, Chair, WorldConnect
